Short Messaging Service

Short Messaging Service (SMS) was initially a property of only GSM. The service originated in the year 1985. However now it has also expanded to other mobile standards such as CDNA etc.

HOW SMS WORKS:

The Short Messaging Service, requires the service centre. This service centre would act as the mediator between, the sending and receiving of the messages. The messages originating from the phones of the subscribers of a particular network would, reach the service centre, from which it would be directed to receivers in a fixed network or Value Added Service Providers. The SMS is supported by all the digital mobile phones.

HOW SMS ORIGINATED:

SMS being used as one of the services in a mobile phone standard actually originated very late. It was felt that SMS could be used to deliver service messages to the subscribers such as the voice mail information etc. However, some people had ideas of expanding this service as a separate mode of communication itself. By 1985, the idea of incorporating SMS as one of the services of GSM, came into light. The discussions over the services of GSM, finally gave rise to three recommendations:

1. Short message mobile terminated: This was to enable a network to transmit a text message to a mobile phone. The message could have originated from a software application or phone.

2. Short message mobile originated: This was to enable a network to transmit a text message from a mobile phone. The message would be sent to a software application or a phone.

3. Broadcast of the messages.

These suggestions were then forwarded for implementation and after several years of research and development, the service came into being. The first commercial SMS is believed to have been sent in the year 1992, by the Vodafone GSM network.

Initially there were very cold responses to the service, as there was not much awareness and a statistics showed that, at those times, the customers were sending only 0.4 messages per GSM customer per month. This was mainly because of the fact that the operators were slow in setting up charging system and there were many billing frauds associated with it.

Nowadays, the service has expanded beyond GSM and many mobile standards have come up with the service. It is also interesting to note that SMS has developed into the fastest means of communication. When considering communication factors, such as phone calls not being picked up, the SMS turns out to be the fastest mode of communication.

The World of Text

Text messaging on mobile phones has not only opened a new avenue of communication, but has spawned a new language and a world separated not by creed or color, but by thumbs and fingers.

Text Language

Text messages are designed to be short, and those who communicate by text frequently have found ways to make messages even shorter. Abbreviations and symbols abound in text messages, and many websites have even sprung up with text and chat dictionaries to help parents and others struggling to decipher this seemingly foreign language.

Considering most mobile phone contracts have users paying per text message, it makes sense to include as much information as possible into each line. Why bother typing “You’ve got to be kidding” in a message when UGTBK will work just as well? The essential part of communication through text language is that both parties are able to “speak” it.

Thumbs and Fingers

Some theorists are beginning to investigate the possibility that children and teens in the current generation are growing up native speakers of text and chat abbreviations as well as all manners of internet functions and communications. Their parents, teachers and most other adults speak “digital” as a second language.

The distinction causes communication gaps and leaves many adults struggling to understand what their children are actually saying to friends and possibly strangers over the computer and mobile phones. Students in the classroom send rapid fire messages to each other via mobile phone during lectures or possibly even tests. The same is true of mobile savvy employees during meetings and seminars. The more text savvy a person, the more quickly and quietly they can communicate with others.

As new users struggle to learn the language of text messages, the skill in sending the message is often an indicator of their ability level. Advanced text users type messages using their thumbs. They understand shortcuts and keystrokes and can shoot off messages with dizzying speed. New, slower users pick out letters with their fingers, much like reluctant computer users.

The Future of Text Messages

Text messages have become as common as voice calls on mobile phones. Many plans automatically include text messages as part of the monthly service fee. Predominately younger users already have grasped and enjoy the freedom text messages allow, and as the “fingers” of the world evolve to “thumbs,” text messaging will become even more common in the fast paced world we live in.

New Flights Text Messaging Service

Each year hundreds of people are caught out missing their flights due to not checking the departure boards in the airport to see what time their plane is leaving. In light of this BAA has launched a new service that will alert passengers by text message as soon as their flight has started to board.

With the increasing numbers of people neglecting to look at the boards, BAA decided to do something about it with this fantastic new free service. The system will work by the passenger signing up online to receive updates about their flight. These updates will then be sent free by text message to the passengers phone to alert them of their estimated departure time, any delays they may be experiencing and when their flight is actually boarding.

This new service will be available to all BAA passengers sometime in the near future and you will be able to sign up to it up to two hours before your departure. The new service has been designed to help passengers ‘relax and enjoy their time in the airport’ and to try and reduce the amount of people that are being left without flights due to missing the information available.

The free text service can also be used to send information on new shopping offers and opportunities in the airports, as well as foreign currency exchange rates that may be on offer.

This new service has met a very positive response from passengers that have trailed the new service and commented that it is very easy to use, informative and reliable. In the wake of the recent disaster opening of terminal 5 this new service is a step forward for British Airways.
