Philadelphia – Once considered a fad for teenagers, text messaging popularity in the United States is increasing dramatically. Worldwide, according to the Mobile Marketing Association, 350 million text messages sent per month. Text messaging, also known as SMS, are exchanged worldwide network with 15% of commercial messages that are classified as marketing messages.

In fact, text messaging is entering every aspect of our society, even relationships. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that nine percent of singles have even admitted to breaking with their partners via text message. This includes pop star Britney Spears who reportedly told Kevin Federline to hit the road via text message. Thirty percent of users said that the text that followed an argument by text message, probably, the same group that ultimately contributed to the separation.

However, text messages are not only about the divisions are too close to connect. Bret Dunlap, owner of Advanced Telecom Services, says his company has been providing dating services to newspapers and radio stations for 15 years. Advanced telecommunications services “Matchlink brand has added a text dating service to go with your existing phone line for voice and dating services. “It is most of the 18-24 crowd that uses the mobile text message dating service now,” Dunlap said.

Major League Baseball offers a text messaging service that allows fans to catch up on the latest news and results from your favorite team. Two years ago, Live 8, which sponsored the biggest text messaging promotion in history, won 26 million textbooks to support greater government aid to poor African countries. The opportunities for promoters appear to be limited only by imagination. In China, the mobile phone is the explosion of publicity, but is slower to catch in the United States despite the fact that many advertisers that have tried have reported excellent results.

One of the most interesting applications that we have seen is one that is sold to radio stations in Chicago, by the spark of network services. Spark offers a suite of text messaging products called PromoTXTRadio. Text messages offer to radio stations votelines, sweepstakes, song dedications, station playlists, traffic reports and breaking news via text message. Even allows radio stations to offer their station jingles that served as mobile phone ringtones.

However, Americans have a long way to go to catch their brethren in Asia when it comes to the growing phenomenon of text messaging. CTIA Wireless Association, estimates that the average Chinese mobile user sent 651 text messages last year compared to just 203 for U.S. wireless users.
